Manfredonia

Manfredonia is situated at the edge of Tavoliere Plain on the largest gulf of the same name. It is the maritime and harbor town par excellence in the province of Foggia. Manfredonia’s name tell us that it was once the city of Manfred, king of Sicily and natural son of the emperor Frederick II.

The Swabian King founded it in 1256 to house refugees from the destruction of Siponto. While describing Manfredonia you cannot forget to remember its Gulf and its port which gains more and more in importance from a tourism point of view. In later years, Carnival celebration, taking place in Manfredonia, became a great attraction with its allegorical floats, parades of characters recalling local and Italian Carnival traditions and the unfailing presence of the famous mask of Siponto “Ze’Peppe”.
